WA+ERBILITY

School project made in groups during 7th semester, Urban Transformation & Sustainable Engineering Techniques.

In relation to the theme ”Living With Water”, a former industrial area located just south of the city center of Aalborg, Denmark, were to be re-designed. Surrounded by a residential neighbourhood and industry, the project site consists of a creek that runs through the site, a difficult accessible human made lake, a heritage from the former industry and an old roundabout for trains with associated buildings.

The project site has had problems with flooding. Therefore the main key to success was to handle these water issues in a sustainable way. By redirecting the creek and connecting it with the reshaped lake, the typology of the landscape were changed and divided into three zones; the cultural landscape, the wet meadow and the marsh. People would hereby experience the water through different atmospheres and become aware of its impact on natural conditions, as the appearance of the area would change throughout the year and according to the water level.

The name WA+ERBILITY was developed by combining water with several options such as; adaptability, changeability, possibility, sustainability etc.
